The Adriatic port of Ragusa had been Established by Latinized colonists, but because of the 14th century it had been mainly Slavicized and experienced obtained its alternate title of Dubrovnik. The mainly Croat republic of Ragusa taken care of a precarious autonomy beneath the suzerainty of Venice, Hungary, and (just after 1397) the Ottoman Empire.
